Memory-Map (qct) Format

Memory-Map (qct) FormatThe Memory-Map (qct) "QuickChart" format is used for maps. It enables us to distribute maps for each canal, ring etc. as a single file which you can scroll freely around on the screen. On GPS enabled devices it can track in real-time (like a car sat-nav) and it can record a trace to show where you have been.
The Cruising Maps in Memory-Map (qct) format require the appropriate software or application to use them on your device(s) as described below.
From 20-05-12 our Cruising Maps no longer require the third-party import option in the Memory Map software and should work with any version of Memory-Map. If you purchased a Memory-Map version of our cruising maps before 20-05-12 then please email support@waterwayroutes.co.uk with your order number or CD number and we will email you a link to download the latest version free of charge.
The qct format is similar to the qc3 format and some, but not all, software will handle both versions. Please make sure your software handles the qct format that we use.
Please test our free Droitwich Canals Cruising Maps. work on your device(s) before purchasing any of our maps. |
Windows Computers (Desktop or Laptop)We use Memory-Map European Edition to create and test the Memory-Map (qct) versions of the maps.
There are many different versions of Memory Map available and they vary from one country to another. It is impossible for us to test them all. You should check with Memory-Map to see which version is best for you. You must ask Memory-Map if you have any doubts about the compatibility of their software and we cannot help you with this.
There is a free 30-day trial version of Memory-Map. We recommend you try this with our free Droitwich Canals Cruising Maps before purchasing a full version. This version works fully for 30-days then still continues to work as a map viewer after that. You can pay to keep the GPS tracking and/or printing functions working after 30 days.
If you have GPS, or add an external GPS receiver, the maps will track in real time using the Memory-Map software as you cruise along (like a car sat-nav). We use a GlobalSat BU-353 GPS receiver which plugs into the USB port of the laptop on our boat. There are many other USB receivers advertised and these are likely to work but we have not tested any of them.
We are not aware of any other software which will open Memory-Map (qct) maps on Windows computers. We would appreciate feedback if you know of any other software which works on Windows computers. |
Apple ComputersWe have not tested the Memory-Map (qct) maps on Apple computers (because we don't have any) and cannot provide any support for this.
The Memory-Map website says their software might work on Apple computers using Parallels or Bootcamp but they cannot offer support or guidance and we have not tried this.
Some customers have reported success, while others have reported failure in trying to get Memory-Map working on their Apple Computer. We welcome feedback on your experiences. |
Android DevicesWe recommend using MM Tracker. You can test this first with MM Tracker Free which is ideal for checking compatibility but has limited features, although these may still be adequate for some uses. Once you are sure this works you can upgrade to the full version of MM Tracker for £5.99 at the Google Play Store. We use MM Tracker frequently and it has proved very useful and reliable.
One customer has reported success using AlpineQuest. We have briefly tested the free AlpineQuest GPS Hiking (Lite) version and it appears to work but the features are limited and appear to be more limited than MMTracker. There is a full version for £3.99 at the Google Play Store, but we have not tested this.
Memory-Map produce their own Memory-Map Application. We have not tested this and welcome your feedback on this. |
iPhone/iPadWe have seen the Memory-Map Application being used with my Cruising Maps on an iPhone (by our son and daughter who both have iPhones) but we have not personally tested this. This is availabel from iTunes for £4.99 and will import our maps (which no longer require the third-party import option enabled).
Other applications are advertised which claim to work with Memory-Map (qct) maps but we have not tested any of these. We welcome your feedback on this. |
Other DevicesWe use a MIO A201 PDA with Memory-Map PDA software installed when we are cruising on our boat. The Mio A201 is no longer made but second hand versions are advertised for sale on the web. There are many different versions of Memory-Map available and they vary from one country to another. It is impossible for us to test them all. You should check with Memory-Map to see which version is best for you. You must choose a version which allows you to import third-party maps and activate the licence on a PDA and there may be additional charges for this. You must ask Memory-Map if you have any doubts about the compatibility of their software and we cannot help you with this.
I have seen the maps working on an Adventurer 3500 and one customer has reported the maps work on the Adventurer 2800. They may work on other versions of the Adventurer series but we have not tested this.
There are other devices advertised which claim to work with Memory-Map (qct) maps but we have not tested any of these. We welcome your feedback on this. |
Suggestions> Use a GPS enabled device for real-time tracking (like sat-nav) > Add a USB external GPS device to your computer or laptop if it doesn't have GPS built in > Use a waterproof case to protect your smartphone or PDA if you keep it outside > Record a track each day, then match with the time stamp to identify where you took your photos
