Slough Arm

The Slough Arm of the Grand Union Canal runs from Cowley Peachey Junction to Slough.

It is 7.9km (4.9 miles) long with no locks.

History

Authorised by Act of Parliament in 1879, construction began in 1880 and the arm was opened in late 1882.

Bricks, sand and gravel were the main cargoes, with a few minor rail tracks carrying these to the canal wharves. With supplies exhausted the canal fell into disuse in the 1960s. It was reopened in 1975 after vigorous local campaigning.

The Route

The route is almost straight with no locks and few other features of interest along its length. The first bridge is Bridge 0, the unusual number belonging to a new bridge added recently after the other bridges had their numbers allocated.

There are three aqueducts near the start of the arm, passing over Fray's River, the River Colne, and the Colne Brook.

There is a winding hole but no moorings at the end of the arm.
