Ascending Castle Mills Lock

Keeping well back in Castle Mills Lock as the volunteers from the IWA (Inland Waterways Association) operate the lock for us to take our Waterway Routes narrowboat through.

We are holding onto the ropes tightly and keeping our boat well back in the lock as the water is let in through the top padddles.

The top gates on Castle Mills Lock are wound open in a similar way to the bottom gates. Note the spectators on the bridge where the next photo is taken from.

Castle Mills Lock is so large that opening one gate is more than enough for us to pass through,

Taken from the overbridge just above the lock, Castle Mills Lock in York looks peaceful when there’s no boat being worked through. The weir on the right can be remotely controlled to adjust the water flow past the lock and the basin can be seen extending to the right below the lock.
