Immediately upstream of Tower Street Bridge and Castle Mills Lock is a watermill with an overshot waterwheel.

Plenty of modern buildings near the River Foss

The channel is just wide enough for a narrowboat between the weeds. Some open spaces next to the River Foss but most is built on with a mixture of old and new buildings.

I wonder how many people are watching our progress,

Boats are a rare sight on the River Foss in York and I wonder how many people spot our Waterway Routes narrowboat passing along the river.

Modern bridges with a wide flat span don’t present much of a challenge, even on a bend, but the arched bridges require concentration to ensure we pass through the centre of the arch, even when the wind and current can be trying to push us towards one side.

No towpaths or footpaths on either bank

Viewed from Fossgate Bridge in York we can see the River Foss where there are no towpaths or footpaths and the best way to see it will be from our Waterway Routes narrowboat.

Plenty of greenery and attractive surroundings

The same length of river as in the previous photo, but looking in the opposite direction from our Waterway Routes narrowboat.
